What to expect in the final days

Many parents want to know what to expect as their child approaches the final days of life. For some families, this information can feel confronting to read or talk about, and they may feel too scared to ask questions.

This guide provides information to help families understand some of the changes that may occur as a child becomes closer to death. Every child and every situation is unique, but knowing what may happen can help reduce some of the fear and uncertainty families often experience during this time.

The resource explains some of the physical and behavioural changes that may occur in the last days and hours of life. It also offers practical suggestions for families caring for their child, such as ways to stay connected, create a calm and comforting environment, and seek support from their primary medical team if they have concerns.

Parents are encouraged to ask questions and reach out to the palliative care team or their primary medical care team if they are unsure about what they are seeing or feeling.
