What do airports and geese have to do with self-care?

Oral Presentation

October 13th 2022 at 10:15am

Promoting the well-being of Palliative Care clinicians is important in its own right but also because it preserves a workforce with uncommon skills and interests. It is also likely to promote better patient care. As a result, and justifiably, there is quite a focus on self-care in Palliative Care.

But approaches to self-care outlined in the literature and presentations may not always resonate with practitioners and perhaps the focus on the stresses involved in practicing in this field too greatly outweighs thinking about the rewards.

What are some of the fundamental protective factors we can consider and nurture in an effort to take care of ourselves as we care for families going through the unimaginable?

And what do airports and geese have to do with it?

This presentation will integrate key themes from the literature with a personal reflection on lessons learned through a twenty-two year career in paediatric palliative care.
