Manly Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice

Oral Presentation

October 13th 2022 at 1:45pm

The $19.5 million Manly Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice (AYAH) will be Australia’s first dedicated service for young people with life-limiting illness. The service will provide patients with life-limiting illness, respite care, symptom management and end of life care.

Located on the former Manly Hospital site on the North Head headland, the AYAH will provide specialised care for families, including bereavement support and counselling. The hospice will be surrounded by national parks, bushland and environmental conservation areas, providing a natural and peaceful setting for young people and their families.

The focus of this presentation will provide insight into the conceptualisation phase right through to the present day, including funding, care models, the wide collaborative approach, recruitment and the excitement, leading up to our first day of operation in November 2022.

The AYAH will align to the principles and goals of the End of Life and Palliative Care and Youth Health Frameworks and will be a centre of excellence for both palliative and supportive care, providing an exceptional experience for patients, carers, families and friends.

This will be a unique stand-alone facility and as health professionals we do not get many opportunities to be involved in the start-up of something so special and so important. It's a great privilege to be involved.
